Taming a chinchilla needs to be done slowly if you are to build trust with your pet. I would not try and tame a chinchilla until it has settled into its new environment for 3-7 days after which, a chinchilla will be happy to start interactions with you. You will need to talk quietly to a chinchilla and move slowly around them, as any sudden movements will cause them to retreat. To commence taming a chinchilla, initially sit next to the chinchilla cage and talk quietly perhaps offering a small treat when the chinchilla approaches the bars. Once the chinchilla is happy to take the treats through the bars of the chinchilla cage, open the door and offer a small treat from your hand. Commence taming a chinchilla in this way until it is happy taking treats from your hands. The next stage of taming a chinchilla is to place a treat on your hand and allow the chinchilla to jump up and eat it whilst remaining in your hands. Initially the chinchilla will want to jump off but keep this method up until the chinchilla is happy to remain on your hands. When a chinchilla is comfortable, you can continue by moving a treat further up your arm. As soon as the chinchilla is comfortable with climbing and remaining on you, you can place your spare hand over their back and bring the chinchilla towards your chest. Remember chinchillas will quickly try and jump out of your hands if they become scared so the best way is to remain seated and try and stay as still as possible. It is also worth mentioning that not all chinchillas like to be handled so don’t be disappointed if yours is one of them.
