Branches
Putting a branch in your degu's cage will provide hours of entertainment for them, but care must be taken to use the right wood (as most wood varieties are toxic to degus). SAFE WOOD FOR DEGUS INCLUDES EATING APPLE, HAZELNUT, HAWTHORN AND KILN-DRIED PINE. SAFE WOOD MUST BE ORGANIC, UNTREATED AND CONTAIN NO PESTICIDES, CHEMICAL TREATMENTS OR PAINT. Remember, if in doubt- leave it out.
Chewing Blocks
Safe chews include pumice stones and mineral blocks, or even pieces of kiln-dried pine wood. In addition, you should regularly give your degus small bits of hard food to chew on, such as hard, dry bread. Why not occasionally give them a whole nut (in the shell) such as a hazelnut? It will keep them entertained for hours and is great for their teeth, but don't feed nuts too often as they are high in protein and fat.
Toys
The best toy of all time is a cardboard tube. They come in lots of different shapes and are always replaceable. Others toys that they will love are soft toys, parrot toys and ladders, cardboard boxes, and cat balls
Hammocks
Rat hammocks work well too degus as well. They love to sleep and play in them.
Jingle Bell Toys
All degus enjoy rolling the jungle balls around their play area. Cat balls work great for this.
Bird Toys
Anything jingly with beads and moving parts is great for them. Bird toys made from acrylic with mirrors and bells will be great and last a long time.
